Treatments with hyperbaric medicine, or oxygen therapy, have become more and more popular in recent years, with more and more patients benefiting from the advantages of pure oxygen for the prevention and cure of diseases and health problems.
Hyperbaric medicine is used by health personnel in hospitals and medical centers for the treatment of a wide range of pathologies, as well as by elite athletes and sports clubs for recovery and body recovery.
This treatment is applied in spaces equipped for this purpose, the hyperbaric chambers, where pure oxygen is breathed at a higher pressure than normal, increasing the level of oxygen in the blood and generating an anti-inflammatory effect that also improves the immune system and accelerates the recovery processes of the affected organs and areas.
THE TWO MODALITIES OF OXYGEN THERAPY: LOW AND HIGH PRESSURE HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS
HOW IS OXYGEN PRESSURE MEASURED?
The unit that measures oxygen pressure is the ATA (Absolute ATmospheres). Under normal conditions, the environment has an
atmospheric pressure of 1 ATA; in hyperbaric chambers this pressure is increased in order to increase the level of oxygen in the blood; always under medical prescription and depending on the pathology to be treated.
FROM WHAT PRESSURE IS HYPERBARIC MEDICINE CONSIDERED?
According to the regulations of the UHMS (Undersea Hyperbaric Society), an international organization that regulates parameters in hyperbaric medicine, oxygen has therapeutic effects for the organism from 1.4 ATAS.
HIGH AND LOW PRESSURE HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS, WHAT IS EACH ONE USED FOR?
Hyperbaric chambers can be of low or high pressure. According to the UHMS from 1.4 ATAS to 2 ATAS is considered low or medium pressure, and from 2 ATAS onwards, high pressure.
Whether they are low or high pressure chambers, the treatments are equally effective; however, there are some differences in the specific case of certain pathologies.
LOW PRESSURE HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS
Unlike high-pressure chambers, treatment in low-pressure chambers is indicated in cases where continuity is required. It is used in hospitals and to treat conditions requiring maintenance. Normally, low pressure treatment is accompanied by a shock protocol, established according to the patient’s age and state of health.
Low-pressure hyperbaric chambers also offer major advantages for the treatment of chronic or acute neurological conditions – cerebral palsy, autism, cranioencephalic trauma, etc. Dr. Champoux, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center (CHU) in Montreal, says that low-pressure treatments stimulate “cellular revascularization, as well as the revitalization and healing of tissues, grafts and organs”.
LOW PRESSURE HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS: SAME BENEFITS, LESS ADVERSE EFFECTS
The pressure of the hyperbaric chambers does not determine the success of the treatment, since in general both modalities present the same benefits for the prevention and recovery of the different pathologies. Recent studies seem to demonstrate progress in motor and brain function in patients with cerebral palsy, regardless of the pressure applied and the oxygen concentration administered. Therefore, the choice between one or the other oxygen therapy modality will only be especially indicated for specific diseases or health problems.
Likewise, although hyperbaric medicine treatments do not present harmful health effects, regardless of the pressure at which it is applied, there is a lower risk of suffering adverse side effects when applied at lower pressures. This fact is especially relevant in cases where neurological pathologies exist, since treatments in low pressure hyperbaric chambers present a lower risk of brain toxicity.
On the other hand, at 2 ATAS and above, oxygen becomes flammable, so greater caution must be exercised in its application.
In addition, low pressure hyperbaric chambers generally have a lower maintenance cost, which has a direct impact on the cost of services, which is much more accessible.
